Professional Development & Consulting

The concepts of sustainability are universal, but every district and school starts from a different place in implementing sustainability education. Whether you have a handful of knowledgeable teachers, one enthusiastic administrator or a new green building, CELF can help you take the next steps towards infusing your curriculum and school culture with education for a sustainable future.

We are flexible and responsive to your needs, and creative and resourceful in meeting them. We stay on top of what’s happening in sustainability education, from programs in other districts and schools (including CELF programs) to the skills and knowledge that colleges are looking for in their applicants, to who the experts are in every aspect of the field.

This awareness means we know what clients will need to know at each point in program development and can help anticipate those needs. We can help:

  • Conduct gap analyses of curriculum maps
  • Identify curriculum integration opportunities and priorities
  • Connect administrators, teachers and school community members with resources on SE curriculum, instructional strategies, rubrics, meaningful action projects, and experts in the field
  • Train teachers in our Summer Institute, provide on-site introductory training or develop a customized educational program for your school or district
  • Explore whether our programs for students fit into your strategy
  • Tie your curriculum into facilities improvements to take advantage of green facilities project at your school

Developing Staff Knowledge and Skills

If you want to introduce a number of teachers to sustainability education in a group, we can provide on-site training. In half and full day programs we discuss the use of sustainability education in helping students achieve learning goals. We provide a framework for integrating sustainability concepts into existing curricula, and review curriculum exemplars and case studies on implementation of sustainability education at other schools.

Our advanced, multi-day programs take staff development to the next level. We customize the work to the specific grade level and your school or district’s individual needs and interests. We cover appropriate content knowledge and tools, including systems thinking, wants vs. needs, green building, sustainable design, product lifecycle, energy, ecological footprint and climate change. We look at curricula and identify specific opportunities for a sustainability makeover. Presenters answer questions, provide feedback and share lesson plans and curricular materials.
